Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) is a nitrogen fertilizer and a key oxidiser in the mining and construction industries. Because it can also be misused, nearly every country regulates its import and end use. Buying it is perfectly legal and routine for mining companies, quarries and explosives manufacturers — but the process has more compliance steps than ordinary chemicals. Here is what to prepare.
1. Product grades and what to specify
The grade most often exported for industrial use is crystalline prill ammonium nitrate (CPAN) 99.5%, an emulsion-grade prill used as the oxidising component in blasting agents and industrial explosives. Agricultural-grade ammonium nitrate (about 34.5% N) is a separate, lower-cost product for fertilizer use. When you inquire, state clearly: end use (mining blasting vs. fertilizer), required purity, and whether you need prill (granular, low dust) or a specific particle size.
2. Dangerous-goods classification you must know
Ammonium nitrate is classified as a dangerous good for transport:
- UN 1942 — Ammonium nitrate, oxidising agent, Class 5.1, Packing Group III
- Anhydrous or high-strength blends may fall under UN 2067 or fertilizer-specific entries — always confirm the exact entry with your supplier and freight forwarder
This classification affects everything: which shipping lines accept the cargo, container cleaning rules, documentation and port handling. It is not a product you can quietly "book as fertilizer" — misdeclaration causes delays, fines and cargo holds.
3. Import permits: start before you order
Most importing countries require a permit or licence before ammonium nitrate can enter the port. Typical documents include an end-user certificate or end-use declaration, an import licence from the relevant authority, and sometimes a buyer's explosives or mining licence. Start this process 3–6 weeks before shipment — it is the step that most often delays first orders. Ask your supplier for their export capability and for a sample of the paperwork they routinely provide (COA, MSDS, packing declaration).
4. Packaging and container rules
Standard export packaging:
- 25 kg / 50 kg bags with inner liner, palletized and shrink-wrapped
- 1000 kg (1 MT) ton bags for bulk industrial buyers
Ammonium nitrate must be kept dry and away from heat, sparks and incompatible materials. Specify a clean, dry 20ft container with no residue from previous cargo — a contaminated container is a common reason for rejection at the port. Ask for packing and container-loading photos before departure.
5. Documents you will receive
For a compliant shipment your supplier should provide: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Analysis (COA), MSDS/SDS, Certificate of Origin, and dangerous-goods paperwork (DGD / shipper's declaration) for the UN 1942 entry. Check that the declared HS code and quantity match your import permit before the vessel sails.
6. Shipping and lead time
Because of the dangerous-goods class, not every liner accepts ammonium nitrate. Routing is typically: production 7–14 days, then ocean transit of about 25–35 days to West Africa (Lagos, Tema, Abidjan), 20–30 days to East Africa (Mombasa, Dar es Salaam), and 35–45 days to South America. Ask your supplier to confirm the intended carrier accepts Class 5.1 before you book.
7. Choosing a supplier who understands compliance
Ask three questions: (1) Have you exported ammonium nitrate to my country before — can you share the import documents your previous buyers used? (2) Will you provide the COA and MSDS for every batch? (3) Who handles the dangerous-goods declaration and carrier acceptance? A supplier who answers these in writing, with examples, is one who will not leave your cargo sitting at the port.
